The Kamakura period (1185-1333) was a crucial epoch in the
History of Japan. It is characterized by the first military government (Shôgunat), which was founded in 1192 by Minamoto no Yoritomo. The name derives from the former seat of the government, which was located in Kamakura (about 50 km southwest of Tokyo). Along with armor (Yoroi) and combat knife (Tanto), the tachi was mostly worn on the battlefield. The John Lee Kamakura Tachi is based on a deliberately simple look and differs from replicas of later eras, which were usually richly decorated and served only ceremonial purposes.
